Current Category Australian Red Blends > Tempranillo Grenache Viognier

Tempranillo is a Spanish grape variety, is grown all over Spain, although different parts of Spain give it many different local names such as Cencibel,Tinto Fino, or Ull de Llebre. The Tempranillo is a pretty classy grape, its wine is dark, well structured, and laden with flavours of spice and tobacco. Another heat loving grape is the Grenache the smell and flavour that may remind you of freshly ground black pepper plus plums and toffe. It is softer in texture. The Viognier variety has the smell of apricots and spring flowers. The combination of these three varieties is becoming popular and also proving to have a particular affinity with the Barossa Valley region of South Australia. By blending Tempranillo with Grenache and Viognier, a rich, savoury wine has been created.

Cascabel Tempranillo Graciano Mc Laren Vale Region South Australia 750x 6

Cascabel Tempranillo Graciano Mc Laren Vale Region South Australia 750x 6

Cascabel Tempranillo Graciano is made with grapes from our oldest Tempranillo and Graciano vines. Both varieties are very well regarded in Spain and we grow them here with a strong emphasis on flavour, elegance and austerity. These deeply coloured, thick skinned varieties make a delicious and well structured wine that can age very well. Tempranillo provides lots of fruit richness and moderate acidity, while Graciano brings the spice and vibrant tannins. Cascabel Tempranillo Graciano colour is deep, dark ruby. Cascabel Tempranillo Graciano nose has ripe blueberry aromas with hints of earth and a deft touch of wood. Cascabel Tempranillo Graciano palate has a velvety blue and black fruit introducing rich, full and suave tannins and fine length. All the grapes were hand picked; Tempranillo (14.5º Bè) in early March and Graciano (13.5º Bè) in mid April. The two varieties were fermented separately, in 1.5 ton stainless steel open fermenters, with some whole bunches and regular hand plunging. Ferments were allowed to reach reasonably high temperatures, up to 30º C. Maceration on skins proceeded for 4 weeks after fermentation. This may sacrifice fruitiness in order to gain better palate structure. Post ferment the wines were pressed straight into French oak 500 L puncheons, 60% new, with the remaining 2 and 3 year old. Malolactic fermentation occurred without additions. The wine was removed from barrel after 18 months, blended and allowed to settle in tank naturally. Bottling was carried out in October, by gravity filling, sealed with screw caps and labelled, using only our own equipment. By our participation in every phase of the process, from grape to final bottle, we maintain full control over the individuality and quality of every bottle of wine. Alcohol 14.5%
