Australian Red Blends > Shiraz Grenache Mataro
The multi combination of Shiraz Grenache and Mataro have a profound impact of flavours and textures. The flavours contained in the dark skin rise in tandem with sugars in the pulp and often shiraz can be picked with excellent sugar - acid balances and intense colour and flavour. The conditions in Australia are capable of producing high quality Shiraz. Shiraz the full dark, dark, rich and fruity wine has a natural low tannin softness and combines perfectly with American Oak during maturation to provide one of Australia's richest and most enjoyable wine styles. That is why in the early days of Australian wine making, shiraz was often called 'burgundy' as it was soft, round and mellow, reminiscent to the new settlers of the supple wines of Bourgogne (Burgundy) France. The red grape variety Grenache in the past was considered to be of too inconsequential quality to have the name printed on the label. The wine were light in colour and body and usually blended with other varieties to be used as bulk material. This attitude has changed. Modern wine making and winemakers have brought about a recent acceptance of wine styles like Grenache rose, a light pink, cherry - flavoured wine, and Grenache Shiraz, mid - red, soft, smooth and juicy wine. It is fair to say, Grenache is also used as part of the blend of red grapes in tawny ports. It also appears in sparkling reds and cask wines where the style demands a ready to drink fruity flavour. The flavour compounds in Grenache remind one of cherry, strawberry or raspberry. The more full bodied wines take on the timber like characters of oak char and vanilla coconut which are known to marry well with Grenache grapes. This blend is made in the classic Cotes due Rhone's style Spicy aromatics from the Shiraz harmonise with textural palate from the Grenache, making this an interesting and approachable style. The regions of Australia where Grenache grows at its best are the longer established area such as South Australia Barossa Valley, Fleurieu, Mc Laren Vale, and Western Australia Greater Perth and the Swan District

Rolf Binder Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache 2007 Barossa Valley & Eden Valley Region South Australia 750ml x 12
Rolf Binder Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache comes from the Veritas Winery which was established in 1955 by Rolf Heinrich Binder. In 2005, on their 50th Anniversary, Veritas became Rolf Binder Wines. The winery tradition is now continued by Rolf and Christa, as brother and sister winemakers, jointly awarded Barossa Winemakers of the Year 2005.The philosophy of all Rolf Binder Wines is to let the vineyard tell its own story. Rolf Binder Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache vintage was Dry. Dry. Dry. The Winter and Spring of 2006 leading up to vintage was the driest recorded since 1914. Spring and summer temperatures were up by a couple of degrees, bringing the harvest period of whites forward by approximately three weeks. This extra heat enhanced the flavours in the grapes although with lower degrees Baume overall. Rolf Binder Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache vinification of the Heinrich was harvested by hand. The Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache are separately crushed, fermented and aged until final blending and bottling. Vinification occurs in open fermenters with pump overs twice daily. The fermentation was completed in tank, the wines were then racked to barrel. Oak used for the Shiraz was 15% new oak, 45% shaven American and 40% two year old American. For the Grenache, 50% shaven French, 30% shaven American and 20% two year old French. The Mataro was aged in 50% shaven French and 50% shaven American oak. The wine was blended to taste and style, utilising the body and strength of the Shiraz, the ripe confectionary fruit of the Grenache and the fine earthy tannins of century old Mataro. Rolf Binder Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache winemakers comments are .. “Brilliant crimson colour, very bright, almost glowing and pales a little at the rim; pure, fragrant aroma at times floral and violets come to mind but also showing warm climate richness and ripeness; Rolf Binder Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache palate is much more delicate than that of shiraz and builds gradually in the mouth and finishes with satisfying, delicious fruit and fine tannins.” Rolf Binder REVIEWS- 2006 HEINRICH "The 2006 Shiraz (61%)-Mataro (28%)-Grenache (11%) is purple-colored with an already complex bouquet of cedar, leather, underbrush, pepper, black cherry, and blueberry compote. Powerful and structured on the palate, it offers up gobs of savory black fruits and spice notes, and a long, pure finish. Cellar it for another 5-7 years and drink it from 2014 to 2026.” 92 Points Robert Parker The Wine Advocate Alcohol 14.5%,Acidity 6.64g/l,pH 3.50
